Saucepan and pots are different. Pots have a thin base and are good for browning meat etc, saucepans have a thick base to prevent burning when cooking out sauces and gravies, and are designed to hold larger volumes of liquid.

They usually have a good heavy bottom to conduct the heat needed to thicken sauces + it's deep enough to keep from splattering sauce everywhere = saucepan
