I think it is about average to do that. I think it a little advanced to put them together. Shaking the head and saying no shows she has realized that they are the same thing and by putting the two together she gets her point across better.

There is something called 'mind's age' !
At Global levels, perhaps the first known effort to assess was done during the first world war! It is said that the result found was that average age was just 14!
And then, we have that saying " An old head(wise head) on young shoulders!"
Upbringing, grooming, assisting to learn to look at things, when seen, that growth into deeper levels of perception, perhaps goes into some kids!

my baby is 8 months old and she shakes her head (saying no) but she actually doesn't say it. She only knows ma-ma & da-da. I thought it was normal. I guess your friend's niece is about average.

Pretty normal although children vary lots. Its very cute when they start talking though.

nope , very normal! They learn No very quickly!!
Also other things for this age are clapping, waving, saying bye-bye, blow kisses and other small things like that.

"no" was my lil girls 3rd word...
its a fast & easy learned word...
babies will start 2 repeat words & motions they hear or see alot of...
its all part of thier learning...
