So the police think that Kate and Gerry killed Madeleine and they believe that they will “escape justice” because there is no body.

So this is the “Arguido/a” concept: We think you did it, but we don’t have enough evidence to prove it. You now have 12 months to prove to us that you are innocent; and by the way you are officially gagged now; any attempt from you to speak to prove your innocence will put you in jail!

Utterly despicable statement!

They have to be proved guilty.

Technically under Portuguese law the McCanns may be "gagged" but get real. They have so many spokespeople, friends and relatives who are forever passing comments which no doubt have come from the terrible two themselves Just because there is no concrete evidence it does not mean that they were not involved. According to reports McCanns have hired top solicitors both in the UK and Portugal ( I suppose you would if someone else is paying). Why if they have not been charged? They have met the pope and reports say they have the ear of Gordon Brown. Look out Elizabeth I bet you are next!

If they killed Madeleine how could they have disposed of a body so quickly without a minute piece of forensic? even the most calculated murderer would have to plan to dispose of a body and it is not easy, if the parents did it and have killed Madeline then unless they have paid someone to dispose of the body off the island then the body should be nearby somewhere, the whole case does not make sense to me, I can't fathom it out at all, can anyone imagine how difficult it is to dispose of a body, I for one would not know where to begin.

Depends on which paper you read:
The Mirror online says: ".... [the McCanns] may only emerge from the shadow of suspicion if Madeleine's body is found"

So if no body is found they may escape charges but they will remain arguido and the shadow of suspicion will forever remain over them!

It's up to the investigating officers to find the evidence and prove their case against the McCanns

They have been unable to because they are innocent.

Toi - I think you must allow for the effect of interpretation by the newspaper (which is, in part, reporting what another newspaper has already reported in order to remove itself from actual responsibility!).

I think you let your cynicism get the better of you. While I'm sure there will be those who see this as you do, I doubt that it's calculated to mean that on the part of the PJ.

dave s - "It seems to me that you are providing your own interpretation on what they are saying." Shock, horror. Someone interpreting something according to his/her own existing belief? Imagine!

Well hopefully the body will be found in the next 12 months, and I hope this statement spurs on the pj to find it quickly.

It used to be 'Innocent until proven guilty'. Now it is 'guilty until proven otherwise'.
