having the pleasure of rebuilding a starter or three . there are
several reasons that your starter is not functioning properly.
it could be your solenoid, the starter drive or bendix, can very well be bad brushes in which case you might want to just take the thing off and have it tested. why people want to just beat on everything i don't know.....
so just repair or replace your starter if you haven't yet ... go on its ok it won't hurt a bit . and you won't have to crawl on the ground with a hammer to get anywhere.

It is the bendix inside the starter not kicking the gear out.
It will need to be replaced or rebuilt.
Replaced is the easiest - there will be a core charge - that is for the old one you get money for it.

Age- wear. Starter motors have a huge job trying to crank a motor over. Its time for a new or rebuilt one from the autoparts store - the next time you hit it- it might not engage.

The brush's are worn out and tapping it will help them make better contact on the commutator.

Usually the solenoid is stuck or has bad contacts---you can replace them separately or it's easier to replace the whole starter as a unit.

the moving parts inside "lock up", so when you hit it, it loosens them, and they work(for awhile. you should get a new one if your having to hit yours. you dont want it to leave you the one time you really cant afford to be late{murphys law})
