YES, a bit. CRT monitors consume about 85-100W. LCD monitors consume 30-45W.

I've got a CRT monitor that's almost 20 years ago... and it still works. LCD monitors have become mainstream only in the past decade, and have still some catching up to do with CRTs in terms of robustness. Overall, CRTs (just like televisons) do last longer than LCDs, but in the current generation, it's best to look at LCDs as their quality has really improved a lot.
