A real number is rational if it is given by the ratio of 2 integers. For example, 3/7, 2/3, 1/8, etc.

A number is irrational if it cannot be given by the ratio of 2 integers. For example, sqrt(2), 7^(1/3), pi.

Rational numbers always have a finite or infinite but periodic decimal representation. Irrational numbers always have an infinite and non periodic decimal representation.

Non-rational numbers are all those numbers that can be written as non-repeating, non-terminating decimals (pi, square root of 2, etc). All the other are rational numbers.
