I'm not trying to insult Bob, I like him too. I just want to understand why his speech seems so damaged.

Lay Lady Lay was actually recorded 5 years after Like a Rolling Stone. For his 1969 album Nashville Skyline, he stopped smoking and his voice sounds pretty much the best it ever has on a recording. That being said, its not hard to understand him, but you have to listen.

His voice has never been great, he has a tendency to mumble in the 60s. I don't think it started with a particular health issue, but its more noticeable the past 10 years ago, but especially live. He's easy to understand in all his albums, even his 2006 Modern Times.

He's a smoker and has been since he was a teen. That's probably affected his voice box more than anything else.

It has nothing to do with his "voice box", I can assure you. His speech and singing are incomprehensible to untrained listeners because he uses very little jaw movement and fails to open his mouth. His voice and articulation are normal.

I think he confused mumbling with artistic merit sometime after he went electric. "Lay Lady Lay" you could actually understand him. I think the first song where it was really noticeable was "Subterranean Homesick Blues"

If you really listen to him, it's not difficult to understand what he's singing - but you have to concentrate.
