I don't know much about DIY and don't have much time to do it in, is it a tricky job?!

I think the best thing you could do is to go to a diy place, B&Q ect. and pick up some of their leaflets on how to do stuff. you will need one on wall fixings for a start. This will help you chose some fixings.

The problem with your question is that, it depends on lots of variables, wall type, curtain rail type. is the rail new or second hand (new would include some fixings and instructions.

pick up a rail pack from B&Q, they come with the rail (obviously) some screws and raw plugs.

the only extra thing you need is a drill and a screw driver, tape measure and a hammer

you will have to drill as many holes as required, but make sure you measure it all up using a tape measure to make sure the rail is centered correctly and also at the right height.

once holes drilled. hammer in the raw plugs first. you need to make sure the holes you drill allow the raw plug to fig snuggly into the hole. if its too big, you will have to drill another hole

once holes and raw plugs all sorted, screw in the brackets that hold the rail. then place the rail in and there is normally a screw on each bracket to hold the rail in place.

put ya hooks and curtains on and ta daa. its done.

Pencil, measuring tape, level, screwdriver... and then it depends on the make-up of the WALL around your window:

IF you're wood-frame with drywall over it, you SHOULD be able to simple screw the screws into the wood header.

IF your wall is brick / masonry, you'll drill and put in screw-plugs (raw-plugs).

Measure the CENTER of your window, and then put the rail based off the centerline... and ALWAYS measure TWICE (or thrice) before cutting or drilling. Also, make sure you use a LEVEL to ensure the rod is level... OR measure down from the ceiling line

I've been doing it (and putting in blinds) in homes, rental units, and my brother's ranch since 1976. GOOD LUCK

Its quite easy. Most curtain poles come with fixings that are rubbish ( e.g fixing that b&q or Ikea include in the packs) , get the right fixings (screws and wallplugs) for the job and ditch the included fixings.
If you need more help , download the 'how to guide' from wickes web site or similar.
