Multiply the first term 2 times the last term - 3 equals - 6 and factor

The factors of - 6

- 6 and + 1 satisft the sum of the middle term

insert - 6u and + 1u into the equation

2u² - 5u - 3 = 0

2u² - 6u + 1u - 3 = 0

Group factor

(2u² - 6u) + (1u - 3) = 0

2u(u - 3) + 1(u - 3) = 0

(2u + 1)(u - 3) = 0
