I do genealogy, and I've had occasion to use lots of the facilities that the Mormons have, although I'm Jewish. From what I understand, they believe that they can go through the various rites and ceremonies of the LDS/Mormon church on behalf of deceased relatives who (to their way of thinking) were not "saved" before they died. They're also big on family, and I believe that they believe that all families will be together in heaven, so it follows that they believe that it's good to have more family members there.
Not my belief, but to each his own.

In a word?
Culture.
They like to know that they are part of and contribute to something that has stretched back into history. It's the same thing with almost every world religion, but it's particularly strong in Mormonism, which has a huge focus on the community.

I think geneology is important to everyone on some level. It's human nature to want to know where you came from.
