System restore is one of those Windows nightmares. Yes you should choose a date in bold type but even then it is not guaranteed to work.

Other options are to try it in "Safe Mode" (press F8 on boot) or even try "Last Best Configuration" (also F8 on boot). The trouble is if the last restore point was too long ago it may not be able to go back to that time.

This is why something like "Norton Ghost" is a good idea as this is a simple system that starts before Windows boots but it does require quite a bit of hard drive space.

If you are having a problem at the moment try and work out what is causing it and rectify it, you may have to do another post here if you can't find the solution.

System restore screen shows some previously auto created restore points, these points are created whenever a major change is being to the system (eg. installing a software like antivirus) so that if that conflicts with the system and cause it to malfunction or crash it can be undone.
to do an effective system restore go to system restore and there in the displayed calendar search for dates shown in bold as they indicate the date of saved restore point. click on it and select event in case several changes were made on that date and then click restore.
If you don't have any restore points created, you can't do a meaningful system restore.
bye

Try choosing an earlier date, system restore seems to take snapshots just in case you make changes that kill the system.
If you are trying to undo an install problem try date(s) before the s/w was loaded.
You may need to say what you are trying to achieve by sys restore to perhaps offer another route.

In order to do a system restore, you have to choose a date in BOLD. Those dates are when restore points were created.
