Picture this scenario witnessed at a party (as told to me): A group of people were gathered discussing Bush and the Iraq war. One young Lib (who, seemingly, had done his homework) was spouting facts and figures to back his case for bringing the troops home. A near-by Bush supporter sat silently smirking for several minutes as the Lib droned on. At the first lull, the Con piped up...."Buddy, if you're not with us, you're with them!" A few high-fives, pats on the back from neighboring Bushies - and that was that. Game over. The Lib walked away - shaking his head and mumbling under his breath. (The person relating this story didn't hear exactly what he mumbled, but thought it sounded something like "how'd he do that?" or possibly "Howdy Doody".) With nine short words, he'd been both shut down and shamed! This made me think: If the stuation had been reversed, what could the Lib have said? Can't those Dems give even that much? a slogan or two? such as Bush spouts (ad nauseum)?

RipHim.... I agree that we need more thinkers and negotiators; but, the catchwords work on several levels... one of them being as a brainwashing scam. People hear these words repeated (over and over), repeat them among themselves - and learn to believe.... by rote. Btw, it works in religion, as well as politics. Sad to say.

Dead M.... Ah yes, a Lennon-ism. Remember it well - and still use it. However, Bushies have already bought the story that the only way to peace is to kick butt in the Middle East. Also, you can show them full color pix of Halliburtin laying pipelines... and they still claim we're in Iraq fighting for our "freedom". These guys are gonna be tough.

bushsph.... Didn't get the "higher pie" reference, but, I'll look it up. (Duh!).....
The "Why aren't you fighting" thing is perfect in many cases; although, it tends to not work in those over 40 (who claim they would be if they were younger) ... and pregnant women (who just laugh at you...)

Mad Man.... Wow! A plethora! Now, if we can get some of the Dems in the House or Senate to say that kind of stuff (preferably, in response to a Bush-ism) , who knows what might happen!
(Yes, born and raised....)

Here's a few:

Neoconservatism is just sociopathy dressed up.

Iraq is Bush playing toy soldiers with real soldiers.

Just how is overthrowing Democracy "Patriotic?"

Chickenhawks are heroes and Vets are traitors? Yeah, right.

Support the troops, bring 'em home.

Show of hands, here! How many of you have a no bid contract?

Just how is tax and spend worse than spending money we ain't got?

Is it really good that Rich Folks are doing well, if you ain't?

This is something I've been arguing with Dems about for 30 years. First you give folks the concept, then you tell them the details. They don't get it. And Political Correctness has gutted and emasculated the American Left. They're ashamed of misting up when the flag goes by. They're afraid to call soldiers the Brave Men and Women they are. They're afraid to say that a high melanin count don't make somebody always right. And that's exactly what the Chicoms created Political Correctness to do. Red China loves Conservatives--they're cheap to buy.

They duck from the Clinton sex scandal instead of harping on how much better things were then, which along with Joe Lieberman cost Gore the White House in Y2K. Hell, if it'd bring back Peace, Prosperity and Budget surplus, I'd say create a position for an official Oval Office Knob Polisher.

I'm not really a Democrat, but there hasn't been an honest Republican since Gerry Ford.

edit:
Did you say in a best answer comment that you're in chicagoland?

a short slogan? no.

real world politics are much more complicated and does the complexities of issues no justice to shorten them into cute little slogans like the republican party does.

the republican party are great marketers. they understand the people have extremely short attention spans and don't want to listen to stuff about american hegemony, state-sponsored terrorism, and the feudal rivalries that exist in the middle east.

they want cute little slogans that they can buy with a vote.

unfortunately for progressives, they believe in telling the truth. they encourage intelligent debate about real issues.

republican supporters want to sell their vote.
progressives want their politicians to earn their vote.

that is one of the reasons why progressives are very always on the fringe in this country and why the language of debate is always controlled by conservatives.

progressives just aren't dumb consumers.
