There is a need for two different weapoins due to the geneva convention and rules of war. Due to the massive amount of damage a .50cal BMG (Browning Machine Gun) does to a human body has made it illegal for them to be used on people, it is strictll considered an "anti-Material" weapon. The 240 is a 7.62 nato medium machine gun for anti personnel or anti material use.

Trust me any top gunner would take a 50 over a 240 everytime if it was allowed.

Different capabilities, mission, cyclic rates, available ammunition & weapons....any number of factors come into play when you outfit your weapon platforms for their mission.
