The concern about North Korea is that any military action directed at the north would likely result in a massive retaliation against the south. The capital city of Seoul is within artillery and rocket range and any bombardment would cause hundreds of thousands of civilian deaths. Any open conflict would devastate the south so this is what we are really trying to prevent by using diplomacy instead of military action.

Little oil, big army... but the main thing is that they are not a threat to Israel. South Korea has never spied on the US, has never attacked any US battle ships, so they are not much of an ally, are they?
