Why did Psychology Today claim that "most suicide bombers are Muslims"?

Psychology Today had an interesting article called "Ten Politically Incorrect Truths about Human Nature". Number four on the list was "Most Suicide Bombers are Muslim". The article points out two ingredients in Islamic culture, the first being polygyny:

"polygyny increases competitive pressure on men, especially young men of low status. It therefore increases the likelihood that young (muslim) men resort to violent means to gain access to mates."

"The other key ingredient is the promise of 72 virgins waiting in heaven for any martyr in Islam. The prospect of exclusive access to virgins may not be so appealing to anyone who has even one mate on earth, which strict monogamy virtually guarantees. However, the prospect is quite appealing to anyone who faces the bleak reality on earth of being a complete reproductive loser."

COMMENTS:

While I commend the people at Psych. Today for bravely stepping outside the PC world in which we live, I do see some things they missed.

No doubt polygamy is a major contributor to the anger, intolerance and rage, so characterizitic of the Islamic world, but two other factors are huge as well.

First, the separation of woman from men, within the Islamic world takes sexual-supression to a whole other level.

Not only does the desperate Islamic male have an uphill climb to find a mate, he also cant even see pictures of woman. The "release" of masturbation is totally left to the imagination, and obviously doesnt cut it.

Also, you have the Quran. Psych. Today used the layman spelling of the book (Koran) and thus gave away their lesser knowledge. The Quran is jam packed with violence and hatred, and they are raised to believe in it as the only absolute on earth.

Holy cow...think before you type, because everything you said proves my point exactly. Islamabad is a CITY! The vast majority of Muslims in Pakistan live outside the city.

The "educated" are a tiny minority. Sucucide bombers in Pakistan make very clear why they do what they do...because they refuse to allow Pakistan to modernize, or in their terms "become western...kafir". Thats the whole reason why they do it!!!!

Furthermore, I dont think I have ever ever heard a lie bigger than "modeling has become rampant in______(insert ANY ISLAMIC CITY IN THE WORLD)"

Why yes, sexuality certainly is a powerful drive and I believe some of the suicide bombers are "reproductive losers" although in general it is the fanaticism that drives them...

There are still a quite a number of suicide bombing happenings happening in Pakistan. Based on this I would like to make a few points, taking a city like Islamabad as an example.

- Almost nobody in Islamabad practices polygyny.
- The promise of 72 virgins is a regarded as a myth among the educated Muslims.
- There is no segregation in Islamabad, almost unheard of.
- Modeling in skimpy clothes is becoming rampant.

And still Islamabad has to deal issues with suicide blasts and violence, the Red Mosque being one of the recent ones.

I guess, Psychology Today's research wasn't very exhaustive, eh?

Perhaps, many suicide in the world today are Muslims. But it's not the teachings of Islam that is creating them but other factors like ignorance or political gain.

I currently live in Islamabad, and see skimpy-clothed (at least by Muslim standards) modeling almost daily in local newspapers and beauty magazines, done by Pakistani models.

You and your source article seem to have a fairly simplistic view of Islam and Muslims. I wonder if you've ever met one?

Take for instance your assertion about the treatment of women within Islam - remind me how many female heads of state you've had in the USA?

As for polygyny versus polygamy, well me thinks you must make your comments with your tongue firmly in your cheek - what is the divorce rate in the USA? You're trying to tell me america holds the moral high ground on fidelity, purrrrlease! Didn't a recent president famously cheat on his wife?

The difference isn't polygyny, nor 72 virgins.

Real Christians don't engage in suicide bombing because they turn the other cheek.

Fundamentalist Christians don't engage in suicide bombing because they have no faith that they'll be going to a better place when they die. They engage in other forms of senseless murder, that don't require self-sacrifice.

the clear mistake is that individuals have a habit of taking one verse from the Qur'an and divorcing it from the context or taking a section from the Qur'an and divorcing it form the historical context in which it was revealed.

Muslims are prohibited to take other peoples lives and there own because Allah (stw) has given us the gift of life so that he may judge which one of us will be the best in conduct.

I'll give you something to think about? if we talk from a religious objective, which followers of a particular religion are responsibile for the historical and present bloodshed in the world(Jews,Hindus,Buddhist,Muslims or Christians).

when you answer that then you may attempt to bring forth your case on why so an so claims so and so.

Well, when your country is occupied, your children getting killed, your sister being raped, your house being ruined, when a way to school or to work or to hospital which takes 10 min increases to become 2 or 3 hours just because some soldier doesnt want you to pass the baricade. when you are daily being humilated, beaten on those baricades, being called bad names, and if you oppose them, you will be put in jail for being a terrorist and remain there maybe for years without any trial.
What would you do truthseeker if you were inslaved in such a way?

When USA donates money and weapons in millions to those tyrants to kill my children, to inslave my people, when USA attacks Iraq with no reason claiming at first that there are weapons of mass destruction, then after not finding any, changes its claim that Usama bin laden is training terrorists there, despite of bin laden's hate for all arabic rulers and enmitiy between them and despite that non even one iraqi was involved in 9/11.
If you are really a truth seeker, maybe you should open that window in your brain which allows you to accept the other side of the story.
