Bopols, you're right. By reading, I meant books/paperbacks where you spend your time and attention to the material at hand.

Very true.

Students now hardly go to libraries to read and research because computers make research easier.

Office workers also do most of their research now via the net. Technically, we "read" when we are in front of the computer, but I suspect that the questioner meant "reading a book or a manuscript" when she said reading.

If we go by that, yes, people now generally read less. That is why the Print Media groups even run advertising campaigns urging people to read. Even the bookstores are reporting decreases in sales.

The decrease in reading is not just attributable to computers. There are just so many things people are preoccupied with, diminishing both the opportunity and the INTEREST in reading.

Personally, i dont think so. For people who love to read for pleasure, like myself, nothing compares to curling up with a nice book. Sure, computers and the internet are really useful and fun to browse as well, but i think the advent of computers and the internet served to widen our views even more. For me, i was able to learn about more things, new topics, news, etc. This just made me want to read more! And it also works the other way, when I read books and magazines and I come across something interesting, computers help in broadening my knowledge (practical or not) :)

i have my reading online, i can even get books that i can't afford to buy and even could have books that is not available on our local bookstores. Whatever kind of book you want it's here, from Magazines, Atlas to short stories. Name it!

It's even better than National bookstore or any other bookstore in the Whole Wide the World.

Battgirl is right the World Wide Web is an amazing tool, you just have to know how to use it. Another good thing is... you don't have to go over the counter.

No. I read a little bit more than before. Computers has its own magic on books as well. I am informed of new releases, on books similar to what I read, controversial books and even online copies of classic stories.

The web is an amazing tool if you know what you want and how to get it =)

not for me. i have always been a bookworm and i prefer reading actual books than online ones...

for someone too who has a penchant for collecting books, having an actual, favorite book lined up in the shelf is one fulfilling feeling. just seeing my entire collection of books is sometimes enough to relieve my stress...

on my end, nope! i don't get the same thrill and my mind is more stimulated when i'm reading. plus i find the author's mind amazing to be able to pull all those plots and twists in a story and make the reader want to read more and to react on what he has read.
