It all depends what effect you want to achieve -do you want her to match the rest of the wedding party, or be a contrast?
If the former, I'd choose a plain dress and jacket (or skirt and jacket) in a darker version of whatever colour the bridesmaids are wearing.
If the latter, I'd go for something in classic black and white/ ivory- maybe a patterned black and white dress with a really well-cut black jacket, but not a trouser suit otherwise she'll look too similar to all the men in suits.
If it were me, I think I'd go for the black and white option. That way she'll be the perfect contrast to your traditional dress.
In the end, though, it doesn't really matter what she wears, as long as she's comfortable wearing it.

She should wear whatever she likes and feels comfortable in. No need for her to wear a suit. The 'giving away the bride' role usually demands a suit because it's usually done by a male relative. The 'position' doesn't demand it.

Something fancier than traditional "mother of the bride" dress, more like a matron of honour. I'd say something the same colour as the bridesmaids, but a little fancier. Congrats by the way! :)

she should wear something she is comfortable in. There is a whole section of the bridaly industry that is geared toward mothers of the bride. She should be able to find something that looks great on her.

Well I would say a nice dress in whatever colour suits her best as long as it does not clash with the bride.........but then I am no expert.
