i have always given money to less fortunate people because i feel bad about them but my friend told me that never again to do this because it just gives them reason not to find work. people like me who makes these people who they are because they rely to those people like me to just give them money. the bad thing about this is they dont even use these money for food, they just use it to buy smokes and drugs. so blame me for those "bums" in the street because i support their habit. so if people stop giving poor people money, these "bums" will get up from their feet and will look for a job. so the next time a less fortunate ask you to give them some money because they are hungry....buy them food...dont give them any change.

I don't think income and laziness have any sort of correlation.
Sure, there are people who mooch off the government when they COULD get a job and provide for themselves, but there are a lot of people who fight to make their lives better without the help of anyone - and sometimes that's just not possible.
You're going to have a hard time writing this essay because your logic is faulty. You can't group ALL poor people into one category - that's absurd and you'll be WRONG about the assumptions you make. You can't be persuasive when people are pointing out the flaws in your argument.
I'd pick a new topic if I were you.

Do a little research on micro lending. You give $100 dollars to a family in Africa, they start a business and then pay you back. Homeless shelters and church groups set up apartments for homeless families and then the families regroup their finances so as to start a new life.

So my argument would be against the thinking that giving poor people money makes them lazy. Most poor people aren't poor because they are lazy, they are poor because circumstances are stacked against them. If given the chance, many people could work their way out of destitution.

Some of the poor actually need it. The others make it a "career choice" because our government has made it so. Often our government won't help those who need help because they do not have kids. That is the reality. So who's fault is that? Pick someone...I dont know.
But I once needed help. I went to the county office. My husband was working and in the home. They turned me away. I was forced to try to find a job and find some sort of child care. And I did.
I am making out really good now.
What do you think?
By the way..my people come from extreme poverty.

Yes, I think so, In My country begging for money became like a business. We have Organizations to help poor people they provide(food, clothes, jobs, furniture) ,But they Choose begging instead.

I think poor people should be helped just until they can support them selves, giving them money constantly will make them lazy and unwilling to work for a living.

Good luck with your essay.

hi there good question.

i believe that this is not always true in some cases.
i used to study at a place in new zealand where people on welfare are able to gain quafications to better themselves and thier families and most of these people have come back to better thier community.
some of these people used to walk for ages to get there.
i think that if we know that the money is going to help them and we know where it is going it doesnt make them lazy, most poor people dont just want the money giving to them they want to work for it in some way or they want to pay it back or at least try.
sharing is caring.
i hope this helps you at least a little

Look inside yourself. Does giving you money make you lazy? Poor people are people; they respond as other people do, in a variety of ways. My husband and I have enough money that we retired early, and we don't work. No one considers us lazy, but I don't know why.

Enabling those with a problem prevents them from solving the problem on their own.

But this argument if only relevant if they are poor because they don't know how to manage their money.

If they are poor no way or opportunity to make money, then helping them financially is not enabling them.

I think the real issue is giving to the needy. Whether or not it makes them lazy is their choice. There are things in this world that work, and one is to give without the promise of receiving. If someone gives to the needy, they will either take 2 paths.. They will make good use of it, or they won't.. If they don't, their life will be fruitless. If they do, your genorosity may inspire in them to in turn help someone else (monitarily or not)
and so on repeating the process. Someone's choice to give should not be based on what they may get in return, but in the intrinsic value of simply giving. If the poor do not spend it wisely, they will hit a roadblock, not you.

I think where this statement comes in to play is that some people (I am not one) believe that when you give someone a "handout" they come to expect the handout.

While I am not averse to helping someone in need (I think it's our RESPONSIBLITY as humans!), you're not really doing anything to help them get out of their predicament. I don't know ANYONE who would actually WANT to be dependent on others to survive.

It becomes the great "catch a man a fish/teach a man to fish" debate. It's more important to give someone in need the tools they need to better themselves as people and to better their situation - whether it's a job-skills program, a referral to a counseling center, referrals to a food pantry, whatever that thing is....simply saying "here's $20" or whatever is demoralizing. It's like saying "go away." Your intentions may be good, but you're not showing that person in need that they have options to lift themselves up, nor are you giving them the self-confidence to move forward. I don't think it makes people lazy. I think it defeats people.

I don't know if lazy is the correct word. It's the old fish for someone or teach them to fish analogy. Just giving poor people money doesn't help them to improve their circumstance. It just makes them dependent on the money.
