Dogs no longer need licenses, but, you should, by law, have a dog tag on his collar, with your address and phone number. You don't necessarily need to have the dogs name on the tag....this is just an open invitation for anyone trying to steal him. Get him microchipped too!!

The last time you needed a dog licence they cost seven shillings and six pence (7/6d) aka thirty-seven and a half pence, per annum. All sizes, all breeds.
I'm not sure what that is worth in current terms, but as an illustration, back in 1960, my food money for a week for 2 adults and a little girl, was £3 per week, and my husband's pay was £15 p.w., take-home pay after deductions was about £12. 10 shillings (£12.50p). He was a metallurgical graduate and a Section Head in a metallurgical laboratory.
So 7/6p was quite a chunk of money when it was first introduced - I remember my parents paying that during the immediate post war years.

The dog licence was abolished in 1987. To the best of my knowledge it used to cost 7/6d old money and never went up in line with inflation.
The Dangerous Dogs Act was introduced after 1987, restricting the types of dog people could legally keep.
There is a licence required for people who are in the business of breeding dogs and there is also a Wild dangerous animals licence for exotic, dangerous and wild animals.

In my city (Bombay, India) one does need to have a licence for a pet dog. The health department of the local Municiplity issues these at a nominal fees after checking that the animal is suitably vaccinated.

I think it is worth asking a few people (dog owners) in your locality and a vet in your area about this. They should be able to giude you in this matter more precisely.

You do not need a licence any more anywhere in the UK

It is good to be a responsible dog owner though and get them chipped, inoculated etc by the vet - for your dogs sake and your own

as with all the answers, you no longer need a licence to keep a dog. But you still by law if anyone happens to knock a dog down, you still have to report it to the police.
