The DVB-S platform from BSKYB already broadcasts HD channels BUT You have to pay for the service.

The DVB-S Service from the BBC FREE-SAT to launch early in 2008 will be almost certainly deploying HD Broadcasts BUT Guess What
Another Box

On DVB-T The BBC have and are still running extensive Tests of HD broadcasting, The problem they have is simply the bandwidth available

The Current & planed 6 Mux broadcast network can support HD but at the cost of other channels. It's looking more and more like HD DVB-T will on an event by event basis.

The BBC and ITV companys have been for some time lobbying OFCOM to keep the UHF channels freed-up after digital switch over for terestreal broadcasting. But Ofcom will almost certainly put them out to bid.

In my opinion HD via terrestrial transmission will never happen.
They say that they are waiting to for up the analogue channels before they can begin HD transmissions because they need the higher bandwidths available.
However, I believe that the government will sell the analogue channels to the highest bidder - and the BBC will not even be close.... as the mobile telephony companies want more bandwidth for the mobile broadband channel that they have planned for £££££££ revenue.
HD TV will ONLY be broadcast on SKY for the foreseeable future - unless anyone wants to contradict me...

You are of course aware that the digital switchover has nothing to do with HD?

It simply means we are going from an analogue broadcast, to a digital one. You DO NOT need a hi-def television to receive digital broadcast, only in-built Freeview or a Freeview box.

If you want HD, you can always pay extra for it, but you don't NEED it - and you won't for many, many years in the U.K.
