By putting 1800 I meant to exclude the British from consideration.

Kushans, Andhras, Ksatrapas, Guptas, Hepthalites (White Huns), Kidarites, Shahis, Sultanate of Delhi, Mughal Empire, Vijayanagar, Pandyas, Cholas, Maratha Confederacy. No doubt there are others which some may consider more important; "your mileage may vary". Unfortunately most of Indian history is, to say the least, very poorly documented.

Based on the impact on today's society? I would have to say the British rule had a greater and much more lasting impact on India than any other kingdom/empire.

Before the British took over, Madras was a huge textile producer and exporter. After the British took over the Indian textile industry came to a grinding halt and poverty ensued.

Hope this helps,
Good luck!
