I'm 40 right now. Never involve in any sport before. Even thought I love martial art but never practice or take up any courses. Anyone can recommend me something suitable for my age ?

Try Kenpo Karate, watch a few demos on youtube.com and enter a few names like, Ed Parker, Jeff Speakman, Frank Soto and Lee Wedlake.

Ask yourself, "What do I want to achieve from martial arts?" It may be advisable to write down any aims and objectives you hope to achieve.

Contact the schools in your local area (you will have to be realistic about time and distance constraints) and see if the instructor(s) can cater for what you need. A good instructor will be able to provide you with a structured training program that you will enjoy and will deliver noticable gains.

You should not be put off by the physical demands of any style. Just because you see younger students performing box splits and jumping kicks in one class does not mean you are automatically "too old" or "too out of shape" to take part. With proper training to you can surpass students even half your age. All you require is determination.

There are a lot of good answers to your questions from other users. I certainly hope you succeed in your journey.

I suggest the Internal Arts.

Hsing I Chuan, Pa Kua Chang and Tai Chi Chuan.

A true Internal Arts Instructor will have a complete curriculum of all three. Any teacher who knows just one of these arts is not worth going to. They go hand in hand and you will get a great benefit.

They involve the development of Chi through training your body in the Kuen( Forms). These forms have movements that stimulate your internal organs, and through breath and intention, develop Internal Power.

Send me a message with your zipcode and I will find a place for you that is not a "Take one's dough" type place, McDojo or in the case of Chinese MA, a McKwoon.

Hello nerdymen, how are you? may i know where you come from? If you from asian country like malaysia you should try silat like silat cekak ustaz hanafi, its more defensive..in the age of 40, my advice you should choose any martial art that more to defensive. I would not prefer tae kwan do because it need you to do a lot of kicking and stretched leg, beside you never involved in any sport before, right? just my 2 cents

thanks,

I'm 31 and just started studying Ninpo this year. I went to a taikai in England and there were lots of people in their 40s there. I don't know about age-suitable so much as your goals and what interests you as considerations. Enjoy!

Middle aged and no sports experience: Tai Chi; it's smooth, slow, easy to learn and very calming.
If you were involved I would've suggested something a bit more crass like kickboxing or karate.

Aikido is often a good style for adults who've never taken a martial art before.

Wing Chun is a very good one because it doesn't rely on physical strength to be effective. Kenneth Chung is in his 70's and he's probably one of the most dangerous people on Earth.

Choose something you are interested in. Which ever style you are most interested in will be the one to fit the bill.
