I've been obsessed with computer technology for over 20 years... Made the decision to get into IT pretty obvious.

Well there is no trick to this.

You have to

1. Know yourself. Know what you are good at and what you enjoy doing.
2. Know what sort of jobs and opportunites exist that match this.

Most careers actually have multiple roles. If you study computers for example you might spend all day programming, or maybe you will do design and planning or perhaps your job will involve training others, maybe you will even spend time selling technology. All different jobs which suit different people.

So it is the same no matter what career you are in.

Many people end up unhappy because they do what others tell them is a good thing to do rather than find what is right for themselves.

Hopefully you have enough of a nest egg or other resources that you will have time to "find yourself" and start generating income from whatever it is you really want to do, before you get broke and desparate enough to take a survival job which will greatly hamper the time and energy you have to devote to growing your dream.

First you need to know yourself, figure out what you really want to do. Then, find out what it's going to take to get you there and decide if it's worth it. Are you up for going back to school to get credentials for a particular carreer? Or do you have the necessary talent or other attributes to be, for example, a professional athlete or movie star? Whatever field you are interested in, there are multiple types of opportunities - do you realliy want to work with people, things, or ideas? Do you want to be self-employed or work for others? Also take into account where you want to live; city, suburbs, country and locale.

If your ideal life script involves something other than "get a job," you may need to be creative in your thinking. Want to fish all day? Big money in competitive bass fishing, decent money from various states for hauling in nuisance fish. Play with model trains? Find or start a museum that features your passion. Make whatzits in your workshop? The craft show circuit, gift buyers markets, consignment. Travel around the world? Courier, cruise ship employee or volunteer (with perks!), mercenary contractor in any number of fields. Paint, make pottery, sculpt? Galleries, public facilities earmarked funds, your own patron(s) of the arts? The life of Jerry the bum (Down & Out in Beverly Hills)? Well, there's always the possibility of getting a sugar daddy or momma... Any of the above, sell yourself as an expert, a consultant, and get paid for just talking about your passion.

Want to change the world? Don't overlook the value of working a more mundane job but finding fulfillment in volunteer work or community service in your free time (or advance into management ranks of a company that will actually pay you to, say, sit on the United Way board). Coaching kids sports, building Habitat houses, tutoring, helping put on special events, leading a scout troop, becoming a Master Gardener are just a few of the ways that people can give back to their community - and have the opportunity to form relationships with like-minded folks.

One final thought, sometimes loneliness and dissatisfaction with life in general comes out as work life restlessness. There is no greater common human longing than to love and be loved... how's your personal life?

Good luck to you in your quest.

I didn't know what I wanted to do either, but I still needed to earn money to pay the bills.

So I tried doing different things until I found something I was good at and I enjoyed doing, then I stuck with that.

What do you like doing or what are you good at - those are your starting points for deciding which direction to go in.

In choosing a career the best thing to do is to follow your heart and if by chance you cannot decide at this point in time the best thing to do is to pray to God and ask for his guidance in making and choosing the best decision in your life. He is the source of life and everything goes back to Him so grab the chance to know Him better and prepare your future with Him by your side.

if you have ever had anything that you just loved to do give it a shot...in a career you have to be happy with what you do...you can not live the rest of your live hating what you do on a daily basis...so experiment until you find something that makes you happy and you could see yourself doing until you have to think about ...RETIREMENT!

I always keep in mind three simple criteria:
- Know your interests (and what you are not interested in)
- Know your strengths and weaknesses
- Know your likes and dislikes; talk about them
