This is upsetting to say the least. I have learned that at times it is better to listen than to speak. So, I shall push my atheistic rants to the side (for now) - and will ask in all modesty - if you can "Please" explain this to me?

Free - As kindhearted as your comments were. I can assure you that I feel the same way about you. Why are good people like yourself caught up in such a delusion? I don`t despise Christians, I feel sorry for them.
Thanks to all who have answered thus far, really insightful answers.

Wow! An honest question? Glad to see there are people here that like to do more than argue and attack each other.

My understanding of this statement is that God, who is a spiritual being, made us also have a spiritual side. We are more than reformulated dirt, God breathed life into our hearts. It is our spirit that can communicate directly with God, not our brains, or emotions. The Bible refers to sin as a cause of spiritual death. If by sinning against God we have committed spiritual suicide, then we need His interference to give us new life. So Jesus took the punishment for our sins and restored our relationship with God. That is my basic understanding of this truth.

God has created, is running, and will destroy the Universe. God is the Origin and Destination of the Universe. God was, is, will be everywhere, God was never Created and will never die / be destroyed. God is beyond Life and Death. All religions of world teach human way to get close to God. You give your Best, God will give thy Best. Ask God for help and forgive, God will help and forgive you. Pray; Worship and Thank God for everything. Remember wherever there is Happiness in Life, there will be Sorrow. To get Happiness, you must master Sorrow. For Success in Life; Believe in Self and God, Learn from Past, Concentrate in Present, Plan for Future. Have control on, be the master of, not the slave of your body, senses, and mind. Purpose of this Life is to Gain and Share utmost Knowledge and Experience to differentiate and choose Right, Good, God against Wrong, Bad, Devil. Set your Desire level perfect or OK to be brave, no low to be coward, no high to be cruel. You have rights of Survival, Self Defence, and Freedom.

I don't feel that the bible is written in its totality to be taken as literal.
Although the answer to your question is quite obvious when one understands how to read this book.

Many truths are written as hidden for when people are ready to read with the heart, not the head.

I feel the bible can be also be read in symbol form

God created man in his image,
I feel means God created man as a creator, as God is.

I trust your bible studies give fruit to ponder on.
Much knowledge can be gleaned and learned from this great book.
Do not dismiss something that you don't understand.
You will grow in to it.

Gen 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

Genesis 1 explains God said let US create man in OUR image.

Genesis 2 shows how man is created from the dust (flesh)
God breathed life into him (spirit)
and man became a living soul (soul)

God created man above the animals more than flesh which returns to dust but with an eternal spirit.

We are created in God's image in that we have a spirit component. God Himself is a spirit being, and we are spiritual beings also. God is eternal, and in a particular sense, so are we spiritually. We were fully formed in the mind of God before the universe was created by Him, and our spirit will survive our earthly bodies.

Another aspect in which we are like God is our triune nature as humans. We have a body, a soul, and a spirit. Three parts in one, like the Triune God. One God, three aspects - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Sometimes people confuse the soul and the spirit - our soul is the sum of our intellect, our emotions, our subconsious. Our immortal spirit is seperate from that, and ideally will return to God our Creator.

What? You think you were created like that by chance? There are many forms of life but humans are the only ones unique in a sense that we have superior attributes and traits than other life forms. Ok so you're an atheist but ask yourself don't you think there's a greater power that designed this earth? How can you possibly think that all happened by chance. Look at the design. If there's a design there's a designer. NO?

There is nothing else created that is like us. Human beings stand apart. We love and care for one another. We are committed for life to our children. We make commitments to love and care for those who are close to us unconditionally. We are angered by injustice. We reward what we believe is right. And we are creators too. Like God we have created more things that no other species has because we have been given that ability. All these things are what makes us in God's image.
When you really want to see God, just look in a mirror, or look at your neighbor.

Man was made unique so to have the ability to rule over creation. Man was made physically diverse in order to accomplish God's mandate to multiply. God is unique. Man was made unique so to accomplish the above. Plus God has/is spirit. Man too, has a spirit. Nothing else in creation has such.

On the way to crucifixion,Jesus stopped at some women who were crying for Him and said "weep not for me,Oh women of Jerusalem but for yourself and for your children". You see those women were made in God's image that is why they felt pity for Jesus.Unlike Jesus however, they did not know where they came from or where they were going.Don't feel pity for me my friend;just for yourself.
