The word for pine nut is pinolo in Italian. Pinocchio only means that in the Tuscan dialect.

PS: and don't think that Italian is really the language of Tuscany. That was true in the Middle Ages

The name Pinocchio is a Tuscan word meaning "pine nut" (the standard Italian term is pinolo pronounced [piˈnɔːlo]), a compound of Italian pino meaning "pine" and occhio meaning "eye".

I think it's closer to pin eyed... it's a portmantaeu. If it was penis nose, it would use the diminuitive of 'ino' Pin-eye Pin-occhio occhio = eye coz he's got pins for eyes. It's a translangual name I think... but could be wrong.

It means "pine nut". Pine nuts are used in Italian cooking. They're delicious!

[I didn't know this myself until I looked it up in my Italian dictionary.]
