my girlfriend just told me she has about 13 grand in credit card debt. a year ago i gave her 3 grand of my hard earned money to help her with her debt and it went down to about 5 grand. now its ballooned up to 13 grand even after i gave her 3 grand. i dont know what to do now. i want to help her but im afraid if i give her money, she's just gonna take advantage and use it and spend even more. we were thinking about getting married but this has me very concerned. i'm really doubting if marriage can work.

Dude, if you live in California and are living together, you might already be considered married. And this is a community property state, meaning half of hers is half of yours, including debt. Watch out! If you don't want to get stuck with her bills, bail out now. And tell her you'll reconsider the relationship after she gets a grip on her financial problem.

1st thing...When and if you marry her....you marry her bad credit and debt also. All her bad debt will become yours! DONT MARRY HER...until she gets some counseling. Make sure she knows where the dollar comes from or else shes just gonna keep getting more and more in debt and looking at you to help bail her out. She has to learn on her own but you can help her by not giving her any of your money. Its tough love. and it works!!! Look for some free credit conseling places for her and if she wants to get out of debt...she'll thank you. Hope this helps!

The marriage will work if you help her now and find out where she is going wrong on getting in debt and solve it before you get married because I hate to say it but her debt becomes your debt when you get married. Check it out if you think I am wrong but I know I am not because the same thing happen to me.

Get her into credit counseling, and check her for psychological counseling. Maybe she uses "retail therpay" to deal with stress, a problem she will need to learn to control. She may actually get a physical thrill/endorphin release from shopping. The cycle problem is that the added debt causes depression, often alleviated by the "thrill" of even more shopping, compounding the problem.

She has already used you. Do not allow her to do it again. I would not even think about marrying her. It would not work. She obviously has no intention of trying to fix her financial problems and if you marry her all debt that she acquires (even if you don't know about it) becomes your debt.

Get her Credit Card. Rip it up and destroy it.

Take out a P & I loan to refinace the debt on more manageable rates and pay it off asap. Can still get married if it gets cleared.

RULE OUT MARRIAGE. The reason divorces cost so much more than marriage is in cases like you are headed for they are worth it.
