If you wrote bad checks to defraud the bank you can got to jail. If it was just that you had a deposit bounce so spent money you thought you had you can't go to jail for debt.

The bank may even reverse the charge if it was your first time and you pay the overdraft off as soon as you find out about it.
If you can't pay the money immediately they will report you to chex system and close your account making it hard to open a new bank account. You may pay the amount you owe as payments if it is very large.
Go talk to the bank and figure out what happened and what you can do to make it better.
Don't worry about jail unless you intended bank fraud.

Eventually, they can summon you to appear in court. They can mess up your credit. I owe the bank too and don't know how I'm going to pay them. They have sent me so many papers I think their next step will be a summons. They told me my account was in default. I don't think they'll take you to jail. They'll probably make you do community service or set you up on a monthly payment plan.

It would also depend on how much and what country your in.
It will affect your credit rating, but next to no chance of going to Jail.
