the answers here tell me that forever Americans are going to play by the terroists rules. Why sink so low? just because Sept 11th happened, doesn't mean forever you have to kill innocent people in the most barbaric ways you can find. Two wrongs don't make a right. How you are viewed by the rest of the world lessens your profile as competent world leaders and increases the risks to yourselves. as one of your presidents said: 'War may sometimes be a necessary evil. But no matter how necessary, it is always an evil, never a good. We will not learn how to live together in peace by killing each other's children'. Jimmy Carter. How much better it would be to approach this in a peaceful way. Nothing is ever made better by war, only worse. The victim is always humanity as a whole. Eventually those insurgants will be sat around the same table as their opponents and a 'deal' will be thought of. Look at Northern Ireland - a successful outcome was only arrived at by negotiation, however distasteful at the time. However, what solution was acheived in Vietnam, or Korea?

How did it get from baiting terrorists with bomb making equipment to baiting Iraqi's to baiting children with toys? This reminds me of a game I played as a kid where somebody whispered something in your ear, and you whispered it in the ear of the person next to you and they'd pass it on... and the last person would say what he thought the message was, Even short and relatively simple phrases got trashed.

What you have is totally incompetent and irresponsible reporting by a couple of moronic AP reporters.

It is clear that a whole lot of people don't understand the report, its context, what's going on in Iraq, anything about the military, or tactics.

The AP reporters gave away military secrets that did nothing but give aid and comfort to the enemy in time of war. AP's contention is that the people have a right to know. NO THEY DON'T. If it's military tactics, strategy, weapons improvements, or anything else, if the ignorant US public know it, don't you think the enemy does too?

Recently the military developed a vehicle that was practically impervious to roadside IEDs. The press reported it. As a result the insurgents have taken it as a challenge and are targeting those vehicles... with larger bombs.

I recall a reporter standing outside a military airfield reporting the takeoffs of stealth bombers heading for Afghanistan. I could just see the dude in Afghanistan starting his stopwatch to see how many hours he had before the aircraft would be overhead.

Now you have this.

It used to be that the military was tasked to win. Now it's tasked to abide by a bunch archaic rules and regulations that are blatantly violated at by the enemy until he wants to use them to protect himself.

If I were in the White House, I'd do everything in my power to see that AP was accidentally overlooked when invitations were sent out for press conferences. I'd see that no question posed by an AP reporter was ever answered. I'd entertain violation of copyright laws if they ever quoted the answer given to another member of the media without giving them full credit. And I'd see that the closest they ever got to a government facility was a civilian kid's birthday at a city park that was at least 100 miles from the nearest government facility.

What's a Russion and where is afganistan?

To answer your question....they don't shoot them when they pick up the item and it isn't "something". It is det-cord, weapon casings or objects the person believes can be used to make a weapon to kill soldiers and civilians. Get the facts right!

You think they don't know what a detonation cord is? You think our troops would shoot children? You think the hardest thing for them to find making a bomb is a detonation cord? I don't think we know the whole story about this for you to compare that to the Russians dropping toys in Afghanistan that would blow up when children picked them up.

And where did you get that about the toys, bin Laden? How about insurgents doing that to Iraqi children as the Iraqi army reported in 2005?

Me thinks you are scared to pick up detonation cord. Go ahead and do it and make your bombs. LOL!

The typical toy bomb claim is so bin Laden. Hey, I didn't think they had plug ins, in caves? You gotta laptop?

Yeah... A teddy bear is the exact same as equipment for making a bomb... exactly the same. I'm not saying its right, but sometimes in war you have to make tought choices, you complain about dead Americans, but then you complain when they come up with creative ways to kill the people killing them and your not happy. Its like walking a tightrope for the U.S. military they're wrong no matter what they do.

If you can not see the difference between explosive toys (horrible tactic) and bomb making material that insurgents would use to kill Americans then God forbid we ever need you to defend our nation.

Totally disgusting. I mean, this is a war-torn country where some people still don't have food or electricity. Of course they are going to pick stuff up off the streets. Heck, if I came home and saw something sitting on the street, I'd grab it to, just to see what it was.

Sounds like a pretty effective plan. I use bait when hunting bears. Seems like shooting Iraqi vermin is about the same thing.
