Nero is the DVD burning program that I have seen most often used:

Free Downloads:

However, DVD and CD media are not old enough to trust and there are some indications that they may not be stable for long term data storage. Data CDs have a more condensed format than music CDs. The most stable media to keep your data on is magnetic. That means either buy a tape backup drive, use a enormous number of floppy disks (only kidding), or buy a new hard drive and back up your data that way. This is how I keep my backups and how I make sure the backups are current.

If you are using Linux K3b is a good choice. You can also get a limited time trial version of Nero for Linux, but you have to buy a license after a week or two. I tried copying files from my /home directory to a DVD with k3b and with smartsuite, but was not successful - Nero worked like a charm! Which is too bad since I do favor trying to use open source software when possible.

If you are not using Linux, what are you using?

WinAVIVideo Converter.

You can download various other converters as well that will transfer mpeg/avi files to dvd files (VOB, IFO,) which can be recorded onto DVD R's & then played on standard dvd players.

Also it's best to use DVD+R's as opposed to DVD-R's.

The +R's are compatible with more players.

Try download.com. They have many converters for free but most are trial versions.

You could try some p2p sites like soulseek or limewire and try to download one there also.
