Absolutely. You don't need to accept every offer that comes your way. If the business intrigues you, you will take the work that means the most to you. Commercials are a good way to get exposure and work without getting intense media scrutiny. Small parts and "extra" roles will also earn you a little side money without the loss of your privacy or having paparazzi camped on your door-step. I have seen many actors in commercials that I recognize from small parts in television shows (most notably the "milkshake" from Reno 911, who I have seen in numerous ad spots. He's making a decent living, but nobody really knows his name. He isn't being followed around the mall by cameras and the media does not give tabloid status to his every false move). If you ever decide in the future to enter into the business on a more serious basis, this kind of work w3ill give you a foot in the door.

Depends on what you mean by the acting business. Many people work in local theater as a sideline, holding a regular job also.

You can " get into it" , but you won't make that much money. Try commercials, auditioning as a background actor, or do a play.
