Backsliding as I have studied it is turning back to a weakness you have given up and turned away from.
Drunkeness is a weakness, if you go back to that, you have back slid.
With any weakness, you cannot turn away from it and stay away from it on your own, you must do it with and through God and God alone.
Whatever your weakness is or was, if you have given it to God and been awarded control over it, and you turn around and throw that control away and give into the weakness once more, you have back slid and you must return to God and give control back to him once again.
You will know that you have failed, and you will know that you need to turn back to God.

Sinning is human nature. God understands that. He also knows the culprit is not you, but the sin nature within you. That's why Jesus' blood covers all your sins.
Backsliding is when you're overwhelmed by your sin nature. You're so lost you don't consider the consequences of your sin. There's no guilt. And there's certainly no relationship with God. Backsliding is pretty serious.
Amazingly, all it takes to return to your former state is to turn back to God. His grace is without limit.
And you cannot lose your salvation. John 6:39 says that the Son will lose none of those the Father has given Him. John 10:29 says no one can snatch us out of the father's hand. Romans 8:38-39 says that nothing can separate the believer from the love of God.
2 Cor. 1:21-22 is perhaps the clearest. It says, "Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come."

It's not only possible for a Christian to sin, it's inevitable. We don't get any super powers when Jesus comes into our lives. Remember, there is no point system for sins, they all keep us from the Father. I like that old bumper sticker "Christians aren't perfect, just forgiven." I think backsliding just means yielding to old temptations from before you were saved, not losing your salvation. You sound really sincere. I'm sure God knows you're trying. Hang in there. God bless you.

Backsliding is from the old testament. The Holy Spirit said He would abide with you forever. Do you think He is going to hell with you? He said forever, so hell is out of the question. If you could lose it, Jesus died for nothing. We are under a new testament (will) and Jesus is the mediator and revealer of that will. See 1Thes.5:18. This is the new will for your life.

You have to climb that mountain to get close to Jesus . When you lose your grip and slide further away you lose fellowship and all the blessings that come with it.
Not your salvation. God never expected you to be perfect but to know who is.
Once saved always saved. You don't lose it by sinning you prove it by confessing and repenting, if only for a while.

'backsliding' is used to describe falling away from or losing sight of your relationship with god/jesus. sinning, however, is a part of daily life. we as human beings can never hope to be perfect, nor can we go for long without making mistakes. as long as you hold fast to your faith and are repentant of your mistakes, you are not backsliding.

Backsliding is when you lose your passion & desire to stay close to Jesus. If you fall down and get back on the horse each time, I don't think that's backsliding.

i believe backsliding is when a christian begins to go away from God, not the occasion mistake, but a lifestyle change that is becoming more and more unchristlike. does that make any sense?

We sin daily and sometimes without knowledge. We must repent of our sins. But not use Grace as a license to sin. Yes you would need to do your first works over. Repent, and rededicate your life unto the Lord.
