This is not common at all. I think it would only happen if the patient was in very dire straits. -LL

Commonly, no, but I don't think there's any prohibition against them doing this.

Usually patients are tended by emergency medical technicians while in an ambulance.

In a very serious case the doctor may go along to make sure the patient was properly cared for during the transfer. This takes a lot of dedication and I don't know how many docs would actually do it.

It really depends on the patients condition must most of the time there will be a nurse in the ambulance but not the doctor.

I've never heard of a doctor riding with a patient. The only time I heard of a dr. doing that was when he and a buddy of his were hiking and he was having heart problems. The dr. then rode with him in the ambulance.
