I live just outside of a small valley community (7,000) about 12 miles outside of the state capital city in Oregon, we don't have shelters or goodwill or such like it. But we do have a homeless man who lives out on the highway that runs past our small town. He doesn't stand by the road holding a sign, but you do see him walking around pushing his cart with his 4 dogs. However I work in the city and you see several homeless men and women standing on the side of hwy. a few major streets holding signs. And yes I have been known to give up some money.

I live in San Antonio, and yes we have too many homeless. It is a big problem. I volunteered at a shelter for families, just answering the phone and stuff. It was so sad.
I have come close to homeless in my life but my son and I survived and came through it.
Anyway, I am familiar with the agencies that provide help to pay electric and water bills. The Agency that helped me the most was the Jewish Family Services. They literally saved me twice from losing electricity. When times got better I sent them a small donation but it did not come close to what they did for me.

Right where I live, no. I live in a very small town, and if someone around here is homeless, then someone has taken them in.
But if I go an hour north to he city, yeah, there's homeless all over the place.
EDIT- Heh, Enigma - I guess you and I both get thumbs down for living in small mountain towns that take care of their own AND strangers passing through. There's less than 200 people in my town, how about yours?

Yes, there are a lot of homeless people here. (I live in Seattle.)
Every day, on my way to and from work, I'm asked for "spare change" by panhandlers who may or may not actually be homeless.
I have a policy never to give to panhandlers, because I think handouts just perpetuate the problem. But I do give to local organizations that help the homeless--a day center for homeless women and another nonprofit agency that provides work for homeless and formerly homeless people, among others.

They are all over the place. Especially on skid row in downtown L.A. The money we have spent in Iraq could have put an end to this sad problem. Usually they stand at the end of the off ramps with a card board sign. On the way home from work today, one guy just went out into traffic and blocked my way. I rolled down the window, he came around, and gave him a buck. I usually don't help in this way because I am unsure as to whether or not this is actually helping. Additionally, if I gave everyone of them just one buck, I'd soon have to join them. They are everywhere. He was probably looking to be arrested. It's sad that people have to experience this degree of despair just to get a meal and a roof over their head.

same as
what does a witch look like?
they do exist, it's your perception and understanding of who is homeless that needs to be adjusted
some people live such busy lives never live at home....neglecting family and acting single, always putting corporate interests above thier family
they live without a home and come home to an empty one,
those that are the "bums" you describe find a place to sleep but some have jobs and just don't have an apt, room or home

there are usually homeless people in every town. they tend to get overlooked because they are in a homeless shelter. The salvation army tends to put people without home into a place to stay until they get back on their feet

Oh yes, there are many here. I live near a very wealthy seaside town in Ca... and there are many who unfortunately do not reap any benefit from it.
btw, I sense a report troll with all the pointless thumbs down.

Yes, plenty of them. Fortunately, area churches operate a good homeless shelter to help take care of as many of them as possible.
