Wow, are you really up to your 18th account?
Popcorn is cheap, can be made automatically by people with little food preparation skill, takes up little space before it is cooked, rarely causes food borne illness, is easy to clean up, doesn't stain clothes or seats, creates little waste, is easy to see in the dark, is relatively quiet to eat, is low calorie (without the toppings), almost universally liked by children and adults, smells good, and the odor creates a strong psychological link that people associate with enjoyment.

Because people tend to eat while watching movies. Hot Tamales, M&M's, Skittles, and other such snacks are slippery, and one or thirty seven can end up in your cleavage in the dark- leaving you with a very bad first date impression.
Popcorn is odd shaped and at least easy to handle.

Because it is cheap to make shareable and massively delicious.
Altho, this is in the wrong section, I can totally see why you want to some popcorn to enjoy whilst doing the Y!A shuffle.

Because of the profit margin for the theatres?
It is cheap to make in large quantities, easy as well,
people like it,
and the theatre can charge about 200 times what it cost them to purchase and make it (maybe more?).
That's my theory!

It makes people thirsty so they'll buy those ridiculously expensive watered down soft drinks.
