Hey,
My dog is a 10 lb LhasaPoo and we've been keeping him outside, because we haven't had the time to Crate Train him. I'm gone most of the time on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and quite a bit on Sunday. Would it work to train a dog half of the week, and then let him be outside the other half?
We've been keeping him outside because he's stayed in our yard 100%, but it's getting colder an he's going into the neighbors yard -- we've seen them CHASING him down the street, and it upsets us, so we want to potty-train him, so he can stay inside. However, I can't be home all the time to potty-train him, so will it work to only train him half the week? *like I alreayd asked*

Also, are ther any other methods of training a dog, that would be more convenient to our situation?

PS - I wasn't expecting this to happen when I got him -- so don't call me irresponsible..

There really is no easy way to potty train, its one of the most time consuming aspects of training. And it requires consistancy. And i always preferred crating, as its always worked for me, whereas watching them is very inaffective because you only catch them about 1/4 of the time right before an accident. Also potty training is BEST done while the dog is very young, or else it may never work. Also depending on conditions/weather it may even be a little cruel to leave such a small dog outdoors. I would either try to squeeze the extra time into your schedule, or see if anyone else is willing to take the puppy and at least potty train it (maybe if you have a really good friend they will help). If all else fails consult a professional trainer for advice. Because this is something you want to do early, and do right

You can buy a potty seat he can use on the adult potty, or you can make him use the little one. Either way you'll probably have to stay in the bathroom with him until he goes for the first few months of potty training. Don't expect him to be able to go in there and take care of it himself. Grab a book and plant yourself until he goes. Don't make it stressful. You can offer a reward of some kind if he uses either potty (like two m&m's). Be patient even if he's not and don't worry. Training takes time.

Crate training is the best way to potty train a dog. Try that. Also, he's way better off inside in a crate than outside. Dogs won't go potty in their crate. But he's still young, so it might take time for him to be able to hold it very long.

Didn't you just ask a few minutes ago if it was ok to leave him outside in a BIG kennel cause he would wake your mom? now you say you are just letting him run loose? But to answer THIS question, NO, potty training is a full time job. The dog is going to be confused. My question is, if he is already 5 mos. old, why isn't he already potty trained or well on way to being potty trained????

You are being irresponsible by letting your dog run loose outside.

Make time to train the dog, or rethink owning one.

I work a full time job, many people do. But you need to make time for the dog too.
