IF A "DRY SOCKET" WILL OCCUR IT USUALLY WILL BE IN THE FIRST 24-48 HOURS POST EXTRACTION.
WHY?
BECAUSE SMOKERS JUST DON'T WAIT UNTIL THE BLOOD CLOT HAS HAD A CHANCE TO BEGIN HEALING BY THE NEGATIVE VACUUM INSIDE THE MOUTH WHEN SMOKING THE CLOT CAN BE LOST. IT WILL NOT FORM AGAIN AND THE "DRY SOCKET" WILL ENSUE.

It would be great if you could refrain from smoking for at least 10 days, this should get you past the possibility of developing a late dry socket. Dry socket symptoms usually begin about 3 days after the extractions: You're going along, feeling good, the swelling is going down, then you start to feel a new throbbing pain that might feel like an earache. The surgeon can place dressings in the sockets to provide insulation and keep you comfortable.
The reason smokers have an increased risk of dry sockets is not just because of the "vacuum" created by sucking on a cigarette. The heat from the inhaled smoke can actually fry the newly exposed bone! Also the nicotine in your system can hamper the formation of the blood clots you need for proper healing.

oh wait as long as you can! You don't wanna risk that! You should take the opporotunity to quit smoking! (Not preaching, i'm an ocassional smoker myself) But dry sockets are a *****. Maybe try the patch for about a week or 2 just to be safe.
