According to my friends, I appear to be extremely confident and self-assured. I'm really glad that I come off that way, however anyone that really knows me will know that I have very little self-confidence.
Basically this is only regarding my physical appearance. I have alot of drive and ambition, and I don't really have any negative feelings about my personality. It's only really about physical appearance.
I want to work on this, but I really wonder if this is the kind of thing that can never really be "fixed" - is it a hopeless cause?
Will going to a therapist really help me boost my self confidence???

Your problem is not self confidence, it is self esteem. You have several options. One is take a shower, get a haircut, buy a new clothes and walk down the street knowing you are the best there is. Two is look into a mirror and see what others see. Realize that people accept you as you are not what you think you are. The hardest person I know to impress is yourself. Stop trying and you will feel a lot better. The third and final thing you can do is get some counseling with emphasis on self esteem. You will discover you are not alone. Many people have the same problem. This problem is as big and as important as you make it out to be. Like the song says: "Let the sun shine in".

A good therapist should be able to help you figure out where the insecurities come from and show you how to deal with them. It might be some thing that you can do by yourself as long as it's not so serious that you're unable to live a normal life. It seems like your friend and the people that know you seem to think that you have it all together so why would you think something different?? It's usually hard to maintain a facade with our really close friends, because they are the ones who see us at our best and our worse. If they think that you have it OK what makes you think that the way that you look is a problem?? It doesn't seem to be keeping you from doing what you want to do and it doesn't seem to be keeping you from having friends and a life that is some what fulfilling? But if isn't something that you feel that you want to work on than yes the right therapist is someone who could help you.

I can assure you - you won't be the first person the therapist has seen with this problem. It is a common issue. And, yes, you can be helped greatly as a therapist coaches you through looking at aspects of your life and how you view yourself and others. You will come to understand yourself in new ways.

You are your own best therapist. a professional can guide you but you have to do the work. You have to ask the important questions of how and why you feel as you do and you must map your way out. If you can determine why you can not accept your appearance as it is then you have to make the commitment to do what you can to change it. Some things you can change and some you can not. You have to learn to love the parts that you can not change.
