The ice up north always melts in the summer. As it gains in the winter. The summer is over, now the ice is gaining at a rate of 5,000 square miles/day.

"Sea ice extent now stands at 4.18 million square kilometers (1.61 million square miles). This represents an increase of 50,000 square kilometers (19,000 square miles) compared to the value of 4.13 million square kilometers (1.59 million square miles) five-day running mean extent, observed on September 16, which appears to be the 2007 minimum."

I read part of it. Simply fascinating! They can't wait for the thing to melt as a result of gushing carbon from use of fossil fuels. And why are they so excited? Because there are fossil fuels under all that danged ice!

BUT! Having said that, consider this:

Dr. John Martin said in 1991, "Give me a half a tanker of iron and I'll give you another Ice Age"

Experiments began in earnest and have pretty well proven him right.

Perhaps the most dramatic support for Martin's hypothesis was seen in the aftermath of the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines.

Environmental scientist Andrew Watson analyzed global data from that eruption and calculated that it deposited approximately 40,000 tons of iron dust into the oceans worldwide.

This single fertilization event generated an easily observed global decline in atmospheric CO2 and a parallel pulsed increase in oxygen levels.

Why aren't we doing more of this?

And, more on a popular level, WHY DIDN'T GORE EVEN BOTHER TO MENTION IT?!?!?!!! Honestly, what effect will simply switching to fluorescent bulbs REALLY have against a thing of this magnitude?

Ha! I agree, who cares who owns it? In as few as a handful of decades it most of it won't exist anyways. Although...

There is LAND under some of the glaciers, land that is quite high above sea level in fact. You think maybe the leaders of the world are waiting for the ice to melt so that they can claim the next temperate island paradise? I am not being sarcastic, by the way...

I read it, and I agree with your opinion on why aren't we fighting to save it instead of worrying about all the natural resources underneath it. Poor polar bears...

Time magazine has been really lame for a number of years now, resulting in terrible subscription ratings.

If you bought that magazine you were the only one. (I really hope you didn't waste your money on that junky magazine.)
