I have a dog, i was told that he is a german shepard lab mix, but he seems rather small for that particular mix. Anyway, he is almost constantly whining, he whines when he wants somthing, but that whine is more pronounced, its a louder whine, but other times he will be walking around and he will whine its not very loud but he is almost always doin it, when he lays down he whines for awhile then he will fall asleep, no matter what you do he will whine, and if you just ignore him, than he stops. Why is my dog always whining, by the way he is about 5 months old.

Part of it's the GSD.. The other part is you have encouraged and allowed him to whine.. He whines no matter what you do.. So you run around trying to figure out what he is whining for.. Offering him food, putting him outside, giving him attention.. You are giving him attention for the whining.. You know it's true cause he stops when you ignore him.. Stop giving him attention when he whines.. He thinks you like it.

Some dogs are just like that - my dog has been whiny for 12 years.
Make sure he's getting plenty of exercise and attention (when he's not whining!), and if you haven't done so already, enroll in a beginning training class (check with vets and shelters for recommendations).
Otherwise, just keep ignoring him when he whines.

I had a foster dog that did that since the day I got her. Then I tried taking her to the vet, and she had a urinary tract infection and an ear infection (with mites). The vet gave me meds for her, and she stopped whining. It turned out she was in pain and always whining under her breath.

As a professional dog trainer for over 16 years, I have to tell you my strong opinion that you need these group classes for obedience training. http://OnlineDogTraining.enle.info/?4sg1
Other pet warehouses are there to get you to buy their products and hang around their strore. And their trainers are their employees...never forget they have an agenda. Most of the trainers have very little education--if they had actual training and skills they wouldn't be there making just over minimum wage--trust me on this. But even if they did have experience and talent...a group setting is a terrible place for learning to take place. It's distraction training and it is the LAST phase of training not the first. You wouldn't have your child try to do their homework in a toy store, would you? Of course not...the level of distraction would be too high! It's the same with dogs. Having said that, these classes can be an excellent way to socialize dogs...but not to train them. And while they appear to be cheaper than a professional trainer...you have to attend many more sessions to get the same results because of the poor learning environment--so you wind up spending MORE money for less training than you would with a professional. Save your money and go to someone who actually knows how to train dogs. OR, read books and try to train your dog yourself. There is nothing they train at a Petsmart or Petco that you can't do yourself with a couple of hours of reading.

Aww... he's talking to you! My cats and dogs are always barking, meowing, and whineing for no reason. Your dog probably wants attention. You don't have to pet him every time he whines but just talk back.
*whine*
What?
*Bark*
No. I'm not feeding you again.
etc...
It's really fun to do.
