My guess is desparation. They hit rock bottom and really need to believe. While I haven't crossed over, I can understand it!!

I simply cannot get over the double standard I see here in some of these answers. Why is it that an atheist receives the proof he/she needs to believe in God and become a Christian, and they are said to never have been a real atheist in the first place, but a Christian turned atheist is never questioned as being a "true" Christian by other atheists. It is possible an atheist can get the proof he needs to convert. That same proof may not work for others but is sufficient for those who have received it.

I think that a lot of so-called atheist-to-Christian conversions are dishonest. Usually it's just an 'unchurched' person who never had a deep thought in their life and are thus easily swayed by the first religion they come across.
Most atheists I know used to be True Believers in one religion or another but reluctantly ended up becoming atheists after serious soul searching and trying to make sense of bizarre doctrines. That's why so many atheists are well-read on the Bible and have a spiritual depth that surprises most believers...

Given that whenever these people talk about their reasons for "changing sides", they give examples that show that they needed very little "evidence" to convert them, I'd say it's more a case of them either having no religious beliefs and then gaining them (rather than changing their beliefs completely) or that they're extremely gullible or trying to fit in.
Either way, I've never seen anyone profess to being an atheist based on consciously (and legitimately) coming to the conclusion that religion is BS and then changing that conclusion for whatever reasons.
Obviously, feel free to correct me.

I have prayed and asked God to make himself real to me and He has. Now I still have not yet physically seen Him but my conversion is personal, just like everyone Else's. No two people came to Christ under the same exact circumstances. Christianity is not only a belief system it is a relationship. I understand how it would be hard for you not to see. It is hard for me to see why you are still atheist. No disrespect by that either.

The reason you can't see it being possible is because youu are an atheist. If you were to become a believer it would be obvious to you and you alone.

the reason i became a believer is because OF SCIENCE, YES BECAUSE OF SCIENCE.
The latest theories of cosmology point out to a creator that is why i believe.
P.S i do not believe in Allah, Jesus, Quetzalcoatl, Ra, Zeus, etc...
all i know is that there is someone who created the universe.

It has to do with FAITH and CHOICE. I have the choice whether or not to believe and I choose to believe. Being a logical person with a high IQ, I set out to critique the Bible, if you will. All I found, to be honest, were more reasons to believe, not less.

With man it's impossible, but with God all things are possible.

Atheist is not capitalized unless it begins a sentence.
Of course it happens. Just rarely. Usually it involves a near death experience. People get scared and suddenly they "believe."

When depression was the only thing I lived for....Jesus turned it completely around...I am full of life and hope now because Of Jesus...
I don't expect anyone who doesn't know Jesus to understand, but instead of religion,,I just started looking for Jesus...He was there all along..
