What kind of stuff should I bring with me? I am not a gamer, but am considering a small mobil laptop if there is internet/wireless available there (I will not be in the "field" per se, I will be in a HQ type office).
Is there anything truly enjoyable in Iraq for a servicemember to enjoy?

My soldier is in a similar situation right now. I would recommend a laptop of your own to take. Even if you will have access to an office computer...You will be able to watch movies on it and there will most likely be internet available. Most of the bases over there do. They have internet cafes and usually the availability of getting internet hooked up in your room. I would split the cost with a room mate if you can. Also, I would take extra foot powder, extra deoderant (these essential things can run out at the aafes or there may not be an availablility of something you like), a picture or two of a loved one, and chocolate chip cookies since it will be awhile before anyone can mail you chocolate anything (It will melt before it gets to you...). Also, make the most of the time you have here cause it will be a different world over there.

As for enjoyable things to do over there...depending on where you go there will probably be a gym and a pool. And usually you guys have a way of making the most of every situation. Just another reason to be amazed at what you do for out country...Thank you for your service and God Bless...

I took a laptop, but to get your own private internet, its very expensive. If you can get about 10 people to go in with you and then run wires to your hooches, then its managable.

PT becomes enjoyable over there. You can get a lot of studying done too. I started Japanese while I was there. Even found some people to practice with. They have movie theaters and other things to do as well. Expecially at HQ bases.

I took a laptop when I was mobilized to Kuwait. I had to wait for several months before we had any wireless InterNet on base, but I did play some computer games and watched a lot of DVDs.

Definitely a laptop, and I would strongly suggest a gaming system when you get over there. You have the ED center and a REC center. Just try to spend a lot of time with your platoon mates/company mates.

Dude been there done that. portable dvd players and movies. baby wipes(trust me) laptop would be a big plus. some sort of mp3 player or IPOD. And a shovel to build sand castles......that's about it. Stay safe.
