Aside from the fact that the Prius is a hybrid vehicle and the Yaris is gasoline-only, the biggest difference is size... The Prius is actually considered a midsize car-- It has approximately the same amount of interior space as a Camry (96.2 cubic feet). The Yaris is smaller (87.1 cu. ft. for the sedan, 84.6 for the liftback).

I have test-driven both the Prius and the Yaris when I was looking for a daily-driver car. I like the roominess of the Prius better, plus the Prius is lower maintenance (Prius has a simpler transmission, does not use a starter solenoid/motor, and does not require brake jobs until well past 100,000+ miles due to its use of regenerative braking). The Prius needs fillups less frequently-- You can go 500 miles on one tank, while on the Yaris you will need to fill up every 300 miles or so. I bought the Prius.

The Prius is more expensive though ($20K+), so if you can't spend that much money, the Yaris is a good value.

Good luck.

They are both very reliable cars but they are in completely different classes.

The Yaris is a sub-compact...the Prius is a mid-size.

They do have very different price tags.

The Yaris is spartan, entry-level transportation....the Prius is a sophisticated, fully loaded family car with advanced features.

They have almost the same gas engine but the Prius supplements it with powerful electric drive (~300 lb-ft of torque) for more powerful performance.

The Prius has much lower emissions than the Yaris, even though they have almost the same engine.

The Prius requires less upkeep than the Yaris (although both are very reliable).

I ended up with the Prius and completely love it...I wouldn't trade it for anything.

My girlfriend drives a Yaris and I drive a Prius. Priuses are hybrid cars, and therefore are for trendy jerks who want to make a statement, and people who want really insanely good gas mileage. Yarises are for people who don't have much of a commute and just need a little car to putt around town in. Both are excellent vehicles and very reliable. A Prius is about ten thousand dollars more than a Yaris, so that ought to be your main concern.

How much are you willing to pay?

We have a Prius for longer journeys & a 50 mile daily commute (30,000miles in 2 years) and our 3rd Yaris which hardly gets used now.
Both are very reliable.
Test drive them to see which you prefer and need, they are very different.

Top Gear is very suspect, especially if it seems to threatten their lads culture.
How can a car with an exra high torque electric motor to assist the infernal combustion be slower? It may feel that way because it is quieter & smoother.
They would rather crash a 250mph jet car than report or support a 350mph british electric bluebird http://www.speedace.info/bluebird_electric_3.htm

First of all, Toyota is nowhere as good as people think. They have been falling in JD Powers reliability and initial quality ratings. GM has more companies in the top than Toyota, and the cars that were tested were 2004, to see how they held up. GM has made leaps and bounds of progress since then, you can only think what they are making now is better than that. the new Toyota is not what people think: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2006/10/toyota_quality.html
Due to Toyotas massive recalls, their executives "promise to do better". Toyota had more recalls in 2005 and 2006 than any other company.
Ok, here are some comparisons with the Yaris:

http://www.caranddriver.com/comparisons/10925/2007-dodge-caliber-se-vs-2007-honda-fit-sport-vs-2006-hyundai-accent-gls-vs-2006-kia-rio5-sx-vs-2007-nissan-versa-18sl-vs-2006-suzuki-reno-vs-2007-toyota-yaris-s.html
The fact is that there are much better cars than the Yaris, and for not much more considering the Yaris has practically NO standard options. The Honda Fit has won every hatchback comparison yet, but the upcoming Saturn Astra is better. The Astra is a rebadged Opel, and in Europe is one of the best selling cars. The Saturn will be imported from Europe until a plant can be converted. The Astra beats the Yaris in every concievable way. It has already been named the NHTSA top saftey pick for cars under 25,000, which means it beat cars like the Camry, Accord, and others, before they have even tested the Astra themselves. http://www.autoblog.com/2007/08/21/candd-crowns-saturn-astra-safest-car-under-25k/
Here are some Astra reviews:

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/hatchbacks/112_0708_2008_saturn_astra/
The Astra should be at dealers by now. Although its more expensive than a Yaris, it comes with way (a drastic understatment) more standard, and optional features.
Here is the comparison: The 5 door XE Astra is the base model, the 3 door is a few thousand more expensive
http://www.vehix.com/research/comparisonTool.aspx?condition=1&year=2008&make=16000000000033&model=Astra&radius=75&zip=80130
The Astras warranty is 5 year/100,000 miles, the Yaris' is 3 year/36,000. You can see whos more confident in their product.

The Prius? Its certainly better than the Yaris, but I still wouldnt recommend it since the Honda Civic hybrid is simply better, and I've had enough for one day.

Im all about gas mileage and i still choose the yaris over the prius for 2 very good reasons you have to think about. first the money of about 12,000 dollars more, will it actually make it up in gas money probably not!!! for the simple reason because after 35 mph the electric kicks off to charge and gas kicks in so not very efficient if you travel the interstates. and the other reason is the battery cells in the hybrid there are so many and if they should go out about 100,000 miles when the warranty goes bye bye then it costs around 3800 dollars to replace the batteries. i prefer not to pay out that much in one sitting. go with the yaris you will have it paid off quicker and still has excellent mpg that will leave you with a big smile on your face!! both are excellent because the have the name toyota on them!!!

As far as recalls go l like to see one every so often because it shows that the company is fixing its mistakes. I would much rather have a recall that fixes something than a company that has a genuine problem and chooses to ignore it. The one glaring example of this is the infamous Ford Triton spark plug blowout problem that happens to lots of 5.4 V8s and 6.8V10s along with 4.6 V8s used in heavier vehicles.

i would get the prius if you are the only person that would use the car and the gas mileage is also very good. And toyota is a very reliable company.
