I am a high school senior and i am a military fanatic. it is my fourth year in Air Force JROTC i am Cadet Major and my position on staff is Operations Squadron Commander. Meaning i cordinate all events going on this year. Last year i was the PT commander so i am very fit. I have been on our armed drill team for four years. Since freshman year i have been wanting to make a career out of the Air Force as a officer. If i am going to die i want one of 2 things. Either to die of old age with my wife by my side and my children grown to be sucessfull, or to die in my uniform while in battle. so is there a websight with a list of careers to help decide what i want to major in? Thank you

-Cadet Major Allison

If you'll research the Air Force Academy, you'll discover that every cadet receives a Bachelor of Science degree regardless of what career field they end up in. That should give you a good idea of what the Air Force's priorities are as to degrees.

As for dying in combat. You've got a romanticized idea of what war is. The Air Force doesn't want you to die in combat, they want and train you to survive it.

You can do ROTC through your 4 years of college and graduate as an officer ( 2nd Lt.) you could even get a scholarship and have financial assistance throughout college. Its a great option. If you want to enlist, the pros are: job that you know will be there ( the companies not going to close any time soon ;) ) pay, benefits for you and your future family respect and honor discounts on many things with a military ID many more cons: can't slack off move a lot (i see this as a pro somewhat though) good luck!

Whoa! Slow down tiger! AIr Force? Puh-leazzzze. If you're so incredibly fit why not face up to a REAL challenge and go Marine Corps? The last time someone in the AIr Force died "In Battle" was when the Anbar Towesr in Saudi Arabia were inadvertantly hit by a Scud Missile.
So, you now have the first of my three recommendations.
The second is to study your hard sciences -- especially math related subjects. You will most definitely need them if you're to fly fighter jets.
The third and final is to remember that famous line Gen. Patton delivered to the U.S. 3d Army just before stepping off into France in 1944. "You don't win wars by dying for your country. You win them by making the OTHER poor, dumb bastard die for HIS!"

Well, if you want to die in battle, Air Force is not the way to go. As for being an Air Force Officer, you need to GO to collage first. Take ROCT while in collage and go from there. But I truly suggest if you're proud of how well you can do PT, join the Army or Marines. I get more of a PT with a profile then they do regular.

I was in AFROTC for a year and then skipped out and got a direct commission from the army instead. You can have any bachelors (or major) to qualify to be an AF officer. It is competitive right now, but from what my friends (now LT's) were saying, it had to do with your performance in ROTC and your grades in general (not depending on whether or not you had a certain major). In some areas, certain degrees will be more helpful, or are required (IE, nursing degree to be a nurse).

What kind of job would you request in the military? That might narrow it down a bit.

Why don't you go to the Air Force Academy website a take a look at their list of majors? That might give you some ideas.

since the AF only takes about 60% of qualified candidates for a commission right now, you want a High Tech(engineering or computer science) degree and you better be getting a 3.5 or better GPA in it the entire time. Non tech degrees are NOT competitive for a slot at all.

The air force blows. Be a man, go into the marines or navy or army. The air force never steps foot on soil.

If you want to join the military, why are you considering the Chair Farce? You might as well as join the Coast Guard, heck, you don't even have to know how to swim!

from my understanding, as long as you get a bs degree, you can be an officer.

i suppose it depends on what you wanna do. i'm a nerd, and when i was considering enlisting, i wanted to do tech work. so i was looking at a degree in electrical engineering.

you probably could major in just about anything
