I am so sorry. I lost my cat of 19 years the day before my birthday this past July. It is just awful. We burried her in our side yard and planted flowers so she will always be near us and in the yard that she loved to play in. We even used to make her her own Thanksgiving plate with mashed potatoes and everything. It is truly heart breaking and it just cannot be understood unless you have been through it personally.
Our vet sent us a sympathy card with a poem on it, I would love to pass it on to you now...
The Rainbow Bridge:
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here,
That pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends
So they can run and play together,
There is plenty of food, water, and sunshine,
And our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor,
Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again,
Just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by,
The animals are happy and content,
Except for one small thing;
They each miss someone very special to them,
Who had been left behind.
They all run and play together,
But the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance,
Her bright eyes are intent;
Her eager body quivers.
Suddenly she begins to run from the group,
Flying over the green grass,
Her legs are carrying her faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet,
You cling together in joyous reunion,
Never to be parted again.
The happy kisses rain upon your face;
Your hands again caress the beloved head,
And you look once more into those trusting eyes of your pet,
So long gone from your life but never absent from your heart,
Then you will cross the Rainbow Bridge together.

My prayers and thoughts are with you at this trying time. People who treat their pets as family members (as I also do) suffer a loss just like a family member. It is hard at first but when the hurt hits, think of the good and funny times you had together. Thing about the joy he brought you for 10 years and the joy you shared with him. When my cat died several years ago it tore me up for quite a long time. I couldn't even be in a wedding the weekend it happened. Now I remember her happiness and the joy she brought me. She was older and suffering just a tiny bit. I know she has gone on to a bigger and better place and that one day I will see her again. God Bless You. With my warmest regards......

How awful for you. Those of us who love our pets understand how you are feeling. Take some comfort in knowing that his last experience with you was a positive one, sharing breakfast. And that he died on your pillow, which would have your scent. Ten years doesn't seem long enough, but as time goes on you'll be able to remember him fondly and even chuckle at some of his antics over the years you had him. Weep as much as you need to. And post again if necessary. This is the place for it. God bless!

I am so sorry for your loss. We've lost several cats in the last few years, including one, our beloved Buster, who made his way to my wife and died literally at her feet. He died on your pillow, in a place he felt loved and secure. You gave him a wonderful life. Don't be ashamed to grieve for your Duffy. When you're ready, you should consider adopting another cat and giving that cat a wonderful life as well.

I am so sorry you lost your pet. There is nothing more loved than a family pet. You will grieve much as you would for any family member. Give it some time before you look for a new pet.

A beloved pet brings things to our lives that are just as valid as what people bring. When our cat died I had to get a kitten to get my mom to stop crying. Things will get better...go ahead and grieve.

sorry for your loss. we lost our teddy late at night and it hurt like he--. the first days are the hardest because you expect to see them when you walk in. soon the fond memories will be more in your mind and heart rather than the pain of loss. i believe our pets never truely go. bonding with a pet is eternal
