"Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need."

It's one of three reasons I finally left fundamentalism, actually; when I sought an explanation of John 20:21-23, I got Hebrews 4:14-16 -- plus a lot of circular reasoning that never addressed the very clear authority Jesus gave to the apostles.

Maria,
He did not, the power was clearly given to the apostles and their successors. Let us not forget however, that the priest acts in persona Christi.

Confession is one of the seven sacraments. A sacrament is a gift of full of grace toward the summit of redeeming power of love of Christ and shown on the Paschal Mystery of the Church. Christ instituted this mystery in where these sacraments is a one way of another opening the Life of Christ in full communion to us in virtue of Charity.
Confession is one of that sacraments on which we communion in Christ Paschal Mystery. Confession in very "essence"- is an act of humility like Mary Magdalene did to Jesus. More aptly, Christ in His very own word: " Do this in memory of Me."
I, believed in one faith, the Holy Church, the Roman Catholic Church , I confessed in the PRESENCE OF THE HOLY GOD, JESUS CHRIST IN VIRTUE OF FAITH, HOPE AND LOVE.
