'Charley-horses' is the first place your body targets when you are dehydrated. Drink lots of water! I recommend purified water and Mineral Water mixed 50/50. The Mineral Water is going to put back into the muscles the minerals they are losing on a daily basis. You must drink beyond your thirst to get the benefits of hydration.
I suggest that adults and children drink 40 ounces of water per 100 pounds of body weight every day. Realize that exercise, ambient temperature, and state of health affect the water needs of your body.
In the evening take a hot bath with 2c. of dissolved Epsom salts and soak for 30 minutes. Afterwards, if you have something shaped like a cylinder and made out of hard material (think of a large rolling pin you would use for pizza dough or something) place it under your leg and push down and roll it back and forth...this should massage the spasms out of your leg. It will hurt while you're doing it, but more so the type of pain that actually feels good, in the long run. Afterwards massage an analgesic cream into the area. You will start feeling better very quickly.
Take 500mg of calcium and magnesium every evening. This will help stop the cramping.

The fastest way for me is to drink tonic water. It has quinine in it and quinine is prescribed by some physicians for their patients with a chronic problem of leg cramps if there is no other physical ailment causing the leg cramps and needing to be addressed. If your leg cramps are from overuse then definitely increase your potassium intake during the day. An 8 ounce glass of orange juice and/or a banana during the day should help. If not, then you could take a supplement called Cal-Mag with zinc. You could buy the Calcium by itself, however the Magnesium and zinc allow for better absorption of the Calcium. Cal-Mag is available in any drug store or discount and grocery stores with the vitamins and it is cheap.
However, the tonic water is fairly fast acting and is also cheap enough that you can keep some in the fridge. It does have a slightly bitter taste due to the quinine. I like to drink it mixed with cranberry juice but if I am having a bad time with leg cramps I'll drink it straight!
Good luck! Amy J.

Hi Jennifer! Everybody says potassium, yeah, that's true. BUT when a charley horse hits and twists up that muscle... eating a banana isn't going to help relax the muscle or end the pain. And yes, trying to straighten out your leg and flex your foot is wonderful advice. If you can do it... I'm usually a crying wimp.
BEST ADVICE I ever heard was to place the bottom of your foot on something, anything cold. I keep one large ceramic tile pushed under my bed just for this purpose. It won't take the cramp away but it seems to help "release" that muscle enough to get up. Sometimes I slide on the tile, over the carpet, until I can get to the cold water in the bathroom.
Good luck! And yes... eat your bananas, brocoli, or maybe calcium or potassium added to your vitamins. Also, if you are on ANY type of Blood Pressure medication, sometimes they include a water pill which can deplete the minerals in your body. Guess how I know? OUCH! Yes... leg cramps!

Leg cramps and toe cramps are best avoided by taking Vitamin E. It is for circulation and if your blood is circulating right, your muscles will not cramp because the body is getting, for lack of a better term, well-oiled. You need to drink plenty of water for the same reason.
For immediate relief, soak feet/legs in warm/hot water or use heating pad for ten minutes before bedtime, place a pillow at the end of the bed to prop up your feet.
Other great tips are at the website listed below. Good Luck!

Lay on the floor , straighten your leg out, have someone push very hard on the bottom of your foot as you push back. If you have no one to help use a wall to push your foot against. You see sports trainers do this all the time
