Hi Mary, I have had two Root Canals done and am also a dental assistant. Advil would be really good cause it is an antinflammatory drug, there would be a lot of inflammation there. Unfortunately even when they take the nerves out the medication they put inside the tooth can sometimes take 24 hours to work properly. I would suggest that if the Advil does not help that you should go back sometimes if it is really bad the dentist has to leave the tooth open for the bacteria and even a possible abscess to drain properly ( I have seen this done many times). Because when you put the temporary filling it this can cause so much pressure in the tooth, the best way I can describe that would be like a pressure cooker I suppose you take the lid off and the pressure is gone. Anyway good luck I hope it settles soon.

you may not be giving the viodin time to work as it is quite a strong dose. If it hasn't wroked after you take the second dose call your doctor and maybe he will prescribe something different that works the same way. oftentimes tylenol can be a replacement but not the over the counter strength.
good luck. root canals are a real bummer and get you down so follow doctors orders closely and take good care of yourself.

First of all, give it about 45 minutes to kick in. Also, you can try drinking some (almost) hot water. That might help absorb the vicodin into your system.
Call your doctor and tell him it's not working. My doctor gave me codine, which made me a little crazy, lol. I called and he called the pharmacy with something else.
Anyway, there's not a whole lot you can do. You could try getting some Orajel at the pharmacy. Rather than putting it directly on the tooth, try dropping some into a glass of warm water and swishing with it. Orajel should numb your whole mouth when you do it like that. It's not going to fix the pain, but it will numb it to a bearable level and give you some relief. Good luck. Sorry your face hurts!

Prescription pain killers oftentimes wouldn't work for my tooth pains either -- the pain was so severe! They typically would BEGIN to kick after a couple of hours. I found that sometimes ice and sometimes heat would make the pain a bot more bearable. Holding warm salt water in my mouth would sometimes make it feel a little bit better as well.

MARY,
MUCH OF THE PAIN COMES FROM THE INFLAMMATION OF A ROOT CANAL. TAKING 3-4 ADVIL EVERY 4-6 HOURS WILL HELP GREATLY.
VICODIN 7.5mg IS ALSO KNOWN AS VIDODIN EXTRA STRENGTH. THIS MEDICATION IS A STRONG NARCOTIC MEDICATION AND IS NOT AS EFFECTIVE AS IBUPROFEN (ADVIL) FOR PAIN CONTROL.

vicodin is not for everyone, i twisted my knee to where it was the size of a large softball/small basketball and it really did no good at all.
Ask for a stronger prescription of some sort or if anything an alternative. Vicodin is generally the generic thing they give patients.
