If you don't have a good solid savings account, that you could withdraw several thousand dollars from at short notice then pet health insurance is definitely a good idea!

Illnesses and accidents can happen very quickly and very unexpectedly, and vets bills aren't cheap. It's easier and less expensive to insure a healthy puppy, than an older dog with health problems, so the earlier you buy the insurance the better.

Companies vary in the conditions and procedures that they cover, so it's a good idea to check out several different ones and compare the policies. Some may ask for an additional fee to cover routine procedures, others may not. Sometimes medications are covered, sometimes not.

The peace of mind that you get from knowing that if something happens to your puppy you can take care of him/her is immense. Think about it this way - could you afford a $2000 vet bill tomorrow? If not, definitely get an insurance policy, it can be a true lifesaver.

I agree with some of the others , save the money or put into some invest, if the dog never has much peoblems then u didnt losing money and I know Asian mind like this idea ; ).
Its true that a animals can be unbelieveably expensive if they become sick. My feeling is if they suffer this much I do not feel is right to try to keep them here just because we love them, and people dont think Im cold, I love my cat so much words cant describe. If u worry the value of the dog for pedigree reason or something then maybe just a insurance can cover your loss for replacement animal. BUt after all is said and done is up to you and if you and your husband making alot of money then maybe a good idea. I know u say the dog cost 2000, thats considerable money in my book anyway. Its not hard to see u love that dog, I wish someone can care me like that la...I think the dog is lucky to have a wonderful pet like you.........I say coz I think the dog is boss ha ha, . One more thing in my experience from my dogs and other I have known, it seems the greatest expense you have with an animal is at the time they die. The last dog I have they say can try to save her but will cost more than three thousand. And there was little chance she will survive anyway. And if she did survive would suffer and require many medicines. I had her put down and can never forget her face the last moment I see her. Those things stay with you forever and are a part of life

Its a pretty good idea. It will provide compensation for any problems your dog might have genetically or if they got stolen or hit by a car. Depending on the plan it can really help vet bills dramatically which can provide more trips to the vet when needed which inturn makes a healthier dog. The best insurance plan is the one that fits your budget. The best way to find out is to ask your vet. They can give you the insurance offers from the 300 plans to 1,000 plans and you can choose which coverage you want with what ever type or brand the best plan for you is on. Insurance is insurance. Checking with your vet though is the best option because they will help you find the one with the best rates.

I looked into a couple of different companies and none really looked like good deals. Make sure that you read the fine print because a lot don't cover certain things and there are a lot of technicalities so they can get out of paying. Also check the Better Business Bureau to see if they have complaints and what they are about. I would go with the suggestion to put away some money every month and go it alone. Maybe you can buy a cute doggie cookie jar and put the cash in that.

Most vet offices have brochures available for the companies they prefer to work with. They would best know which are reputable and pay as they should. Talk to the billing person at your vet about different plans for different needs.

The vet bills for just the basic puppy needs are not cheap. You are going to have the dog's lifetime of medical needs. Then there are the unforseen emergency situations that could bankrupt anyone. It has gotten to the point that a pet owner can not afford to not have coverage. There are many different plan options to consider.

For me pet insurance wasn't worth it. What I've done instead is to look up what I'd spend on a month on insurance premiums every month and put at minimum that much into a savings account. At least once a month of not with every paycheck I put money into the animals emergency fund.

This way its always available when I need, and it collects some interest too.

Yup it's a good idea.. It's like any other insurance.. You are gambling on the fact that the dog might need the coverage.. In the end you might find that it wasn't necessary, but you might also look back and be glad that you spent the money.

I've found that a lot sort of depends on luck. The VPI brochure that I looked through didn't really look like that good of a deal...they dont' cover most of the cost for vaccinations, heartworm prevention, dentals, etc...but they do pay a fairly good amount of money to deal with emergencies (granted your dog has met all of the qualifications). I think you'd probably do better to just put away some money each month into a doggy emergency fund. That way you're not just throwing away money to a company. Look into other companies, though, this one has been my only experience.

I think pet insurance is a waste of money. Most don't cover much & you have to pay your vet bills up front. You'd be better off to set up a savings account, just for vet care.
