For those confused, I believe the asker is trying to point out the fact that the USA backed Saddam Hussein when it was "diplomatically" convenient. When it was no longer diplomatically convenient, he became a treacherous "evil-doer," even though he had been doing evil, in plain sight, pretty much his entire life--definitely his entire career.

I'm not sure why the asker failed to point out that the U.S. CIA actually provided terrorist training to Osama et al.

For some reason, Bush and Cheney and all those guys haven't spent much time explaining exactly why it was the U.S. did that, back in the day.

Curiosity-seekers might also be interested in researching keywords like "Sandanistas."

Man, pretty much everything Republican since just before the Kennedy assassination has some right ugly slime around its edges. People don't think that much about the effects of the RFK assassination on the world stage, but that pretty much has set the tone for the past (going on) 40 years now.

Check it. Wtf was going down with knocking off John and then making sure Bobby would never set foot in the Oval office? I'll give you a hint. It goes "ka-ching!"

Well, it may be more of a poor choice than a support your local terrorist choice.

Really, at one point the Taliban was fighting communism. who were we fighting? The communists!! Lesser of 2 evils at the time. Maybe there was ignorance? I don't know. Was not that involved in politics when Russia was trying to over-run Afghanistan. See that? Russia was being a bully and we did not let them. Saddam was being a bully against Kuwait, and we did not let him. When we began to become more aware of the terrible things Hussein was doing in his own country, we stopped tolerating it. Saudi Arabia? Not sure what they did to tick you off....

I am trying my best to stay out of the business of politics, as I am neither well informed enough, nor interested enough in it to stick my big nose in where it's not welcome.

It seems the administration has a history of supporting terrorism, but only if it benefits them.
This is very true.
Most people will not bother to understand your question or to read any history to see that its true.
