We have been quoted $1600 to buy 53.3 sq feet Stainmaster Pacific Coast brand w/ waterproof pad for two rooms, eight stairs with runners. Does that sound like a good price for materials? I was surpised to find that Home Depot charges $1700 for the same thing. what do you think of this price? Should we keep shopping?

Try looking at stores that sell and specialize in just carpet. That price sounds high.

That price is outrageous unless the carpet is absolutely Top-of-line. I just carpeted my entire house, almost 1,000 sq feet for about $15 a square yard. There are 9 feet in a sq yard so that is about 111 sq yards X $15 = $1665 and that includes pad and installation. $1600 for 53 sq feet is $30 a sq yd. Are you sure its 53.3 sq feet and not 53.3 sq yards? A small room that is 12 X 12 = 144 sq feet
